Norwich Medieval Churches
“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” Thomas Merton.
This gallery is dedicated to some of Norwich's most oldest and beautiful built churches. Once Norwich had 57 medieval churches and those that remain are either not used as they once were or not used at all. Fascinated with their historical past, and the fact that Norwich had the most medieval churches in the UK, Morgan has recreated 13 of the most known and unknown, separating them from structures that surround them today to depict their general isolation.
Using light, symbols and an emergence of colours, the mood of which alters dramatically when viewed at different times of day and in different light, the churches have been brought together to be experienced in a visual and physical exploration. We see full moons (symbolic of completeness, renewal and continuation) and dragons (symbolic of association, protection and wisdom).
Painted with knife on box canvas, 61 x 50.8 x 4 cm in acrylics, the mood of these paintings alter dramatically when viewed at different times of the day and in different light.
